This week I had to take the (always fun) LSAT, which for those of you that don't know it is the entrance exam for law school. I am nervously awaiting my score so any good vibes you would like to send my way I will greatly accept. Since I am not taking any classes this summer and I have completed the LSAT, my parents took me on a trip to DC. Unlike most of the 8th graders in the US, my class did not get to go on the trip to our nation's capital. You could say that I have been geeking out about this trip for a long time.
We left on Tuesday morning and the car ride took around 6 hours. We came back home on Saturday morning. This allowed us around three and a half days to explore and see the sights of the city!

Here is what our itinerary consisted of: Law Schools - Georgetown University, George Washington University, and American University National Mall - Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, WWII Memorial, Smithsonian Institution, Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Air and Space Museum (where I got to hold part of a meteorite and touch a moon rock!), Smithsonian National Zoo, United States Botanical Garden National Archives Capitol Hill Library of Congress Supreme Court Arlington Cemetery - Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Marine Corps Memorial White House Georgetown | |
We got through all of that in just three and a half days and there is still plenty I would like to go back and see. (Hopefully I will live there in the near future!) I have some helpful tips if you are planning on going to DC:
1. Bring your walking shoes! You will be walking a lot no matter how much you use public transportation. Which leads me to...
2. Look at a map, make a plan of where you want to go and what you want to see. This will help you to see all that you want to see by sectioning out and figuring what monuments are close to what memorials and sights you want to see in DC.
3. Restaurants fill up fast in DC, which means you should try to make reservations at restaurants that are near the sights you are seeing during that time of the day whether it be lunch or dinner.
4. Speaking of restaurants, some great ones to go to are: Old Ebbitt Grill (by the White House), Founding Fathers (in Foggy Bottom), and Filomena (in Georgetown).
5. Besides the National Mall, monuments, memorials, and sights you want to see, I suggest visiting other sections of DC, particularly Georgetown and Foggy Bottom, because they seemed as if they were in a different world while being right in the middle of DC.
6. Take advantage of all the free (and almost free) opportunities in DC. Most of the museums are free to get into so check those out!

I hope my itinerary and tips have helped you plan your next trip to Washington DC! I know that I want to go back there as soon as possible, I love the rush you get when being in a city and the sense of history that DC has. I will be having that feeling again on the 19th when I go to New York City and then leave for the Philippines a few days later! I am very excited for my new adventure and can't wait to tell you all about it. Check back soon!
Lots of love,
Kirsten
