This semester I am taking POL 270L, International Relations: A Survey, Concepts, and Analysis, taught by Professor Guy de Muyser. He was Marshal of the Court to the Grand Duke of Luxembourg for 12 years and an Ambassador for Luxembourg to Moscow, Helsinki, Warsaw, Bulan, Betor, Brussels, and NATO. He invited our class to his home for dinner.
His home is gorgeous, very traditional. There are paintings and decorations everywhere, all having meaning to him and his family. He invited the Chargè d’Affaires, which is the US Ambassador to Luxembourg from the United States, Alison Shorter-Lawrence, to speak to us.
She spoke about what an embassy is, her career, and the foreign service. They have both led such amazing lives! I am now convinced that I want to work for the foreign service. I know I’ve changed my mind a lot (*cough* Changed my major about 5 or 6 times *cough*) but I’ve actually never felt so sure about something in my life. It is exactly what I want to do.
We had a wonderful dinner and got to speak to our professor, the ambassador, and her husband for hours.
I saw some pictures on a trunk and asked my professor about them. They were of the present Grand Duke and his wife, the Grand Duke he served under and his wife, a picture of him briefing the Grand Duke on a flight to China, one of him meeting the Pope with the Grand Duke, and the Grand Duke’s daughters. He spoke of it so casually, as if it wasn’t a big deal at all. There was also a Japanese screen with a “diplomatic” story that I got to hear about. He also had three artifacts from Africa, Russia, and North America that all had different meanings to him but you could see a connection between them all, which was incredible!
It was an amazing and very influential night in my life that I will never forget!
